Grant Will Create More Affordable Housing for Low-Income Seniors
Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today announced a $8,220,193 federal grant to support 149 affordable housing units for low-income Michigan seniors at the Presbyterian Villages of Michigan’s Court Street Village in Flint.
The federal grant was awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly Program. The Section 202 program helps expand the supply of affordable housing with supportive services for seniors. It provides very low-income seniors with housing options that allow them to live independently in an environment that provides support activities such as cleaning, cooking and transportation.
“Investing in affordable housing for seniors will help make our neighborhoods safer and stronger. Every person, regardless of their zip code, should have access to affordable and safe housing,” Congressman Kildee said. “I am proud to announce this federal grant to support the important work that the Presbyterian Villages of Michigan is doing in Flint, and I will continue to work to bring federal resources back to mid-Michigan.
“This announcement is terrific news for seniors in Flint and greater Genesee County. It will greatly assist the efforts of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan and the McFarlan Charitable Corporation to complete a comprehensive renovation of the Court Street East senior community. These renovations are an important first step to a large redevelopment plan that will be implemented over the next several years to create an affordable continuum of housing and health and wellness services. PVM and McFarlan are very grateful to Congressman Kildee and HUD for their strong support, as well as that from MSHDA, the City of Flint, the Flint Housing Commission and other community partners and stakeholders,” said Roger L. Myers, President and CEO of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan.
Congressman Kildee has worked to strengthen neighborhoods in communities across Michigan’s Fifth Congressional District. Recently, Kildee advanced $8.8 million in funding for local projects, as part of Fiscal Year 2022 appropriations bills, which included funding to provide affordable housing for low-income families and veterans. In February 2020, Kildee announced another NeighborWorks grant to promote affordable housing in Flint. Congressman Kildee previously announced $1.2 million in federal housing grants to help support and promote affordable, safe housing opportunities for families and seniors impacted by the coronavirus.
