Legacy Corps is searching for veterans or military families currently caring for veterans who are in need of caregiving support services in their homes in Western Wayne County. Families would receive free caregiving support services including, but not limited to companionship, errands, shopping, light housekeeping and meal preparation from extensively trained volunteers. Personal or medical care cannot be provided through this program. The program will be available in Western Wayne County in December.
This caregiving support program is a service effort of Legacy Corps (an AmeriCorps Program) and is currently being offered in many different locations nationally. The Western Wayne County Program is being hosted by Presbyterian Villages of Michigan (PVM) through Community Connections of Michigan, in an effort to encourage aging in the community for individuals over 50.
Legacy Corps is also in need of volunteer caregivers to begin training and providing care for our veterans immediately. Volunteers would agree to a one-year commitment of service, providing 10-12 hours of care per week (450 hours/annually) in exchange for a $200/month living allowance and a $1,493 educational award, which would be distributed at the end of the service commitment. The living allowance will not adversely impact individuals who receive government benefits such as subsidized housing or disability insurance.
“PVM and Community Connections of Michigan are thrilled to be hosting the Legacy Corps caregiving support program in Western Wayne County. This service will be meeting a critical need for our veterans and military families, who have already sacrificed so much in service to our country,” said Roger L. Myers, President and CEO of PVM.
All individuals or families interested in receiving caregiving services or volunteering for the caregiving support program should call Presbyterian Villages of Michigan at (248) 281-2020.
